Wood Chips is a collection of notes on things that strike me as interesting or amusing.

The blog’s banner picture of  St. Mark’s Square reflects my fascination with Venice, one of the world’s most enjoyable cities.  The achitecture … the art … the food … the canals (of course) … and a history that’s as spectacularly outsized as any of that.   At one time, the Serene Republic really punched above its weight (even more so than Britain).  Today, it struggles to stay above water.   Quite a metaphor for the transience of wealth and power.
