The above map of the world, drawn by Facebook data structuring intern Paul Butler using connections between 10 million Facebook friends (full-size link), is interesting enough in itself until you realize that all of the country borders are entirely drawn using Facebook friend connections too. Even if the world was dark and totally unmapped, Facebook could produce a remarkably good approximation of most of its continents’ boundaries, and even the borders of some countries.

Switzerland’s new “Anti PowerPoint Party” (APPP) claims that PowerPoint sucks the creativity, spontaneity and audience interest out of any given topic. “If you do a PowerPoint presentation and it goes well, in 95 out of 100 cases if you do it without PowerPoint, the version without PowerPoint will beat it,” said Matthias Poehm, the president of the APPP, in a not very exciting video presentation.

He has a lot of unverifiable statistics to back him up. By assuming that across Europe, 11% of the 296 million employees are being subjected to twice-weekly PowerPoint presentations, Mr. Poehm calculates that lost productivity due to PowerPoint amounts to €110 billion per annum.

You’ve gotta love those Swiss!

Citroen has a very witty advertisement, about a man pretending that his car has lots of high-end features.  It’s a great example of communication without words.

GM is trying a rather creative marketing approach in Europe for its Chevy Orlando:

The company crafted a full-scale Play-Doh model of the MPV and parked it in downtown London. The installation weighs in at a staggering 1.5 tons and measures 15 feet long by almost six feet wide.

Reportedly, the real Orlando is not made of Play-Doh: The marketing is based on survey findings that Play-Doh was the most popular toy of yesteryear, beating Legos at 19% to 17%.  One can hardly wait for the Wii Wagon.

Voters who are frustrated with California’s recurring multi-billion dollar budget deficits are going to be apoplectic when they realize the even greater problem of unfunded state pension liabilities.
